Jack and I extended our weekend through Monday, and headed to Connecticut to visit family and check out a polo match.
Giant Valley Polo Club has been active on Butterworth Farm in Mt. Carmel for decades, apparently, but it’s still relatively hidden. For $5 per person (or $10 per car), spectators can stop by at 3pm on Sundays and drive right up to the polo field with their picnics and tailgating supplies.
Jack’s mother gets all the credit for finding this gem (and for that snazzy cooler-stool, too, actually), and live polo was a first for all of us – but we’ll definitely be back. The weather was perfect, the heat tempered by the pond nearby, and I have a soft spot for thoroughbreds thundering by in close proximity.
Giant Valley is careful to explain the action, and the duties of spectators, over the loudspeakers – divot-stomping included.
Visit the Giant Valley Polo site for the full 2013 schedule and directions. Have you ever been to a polo match? What’s your favorite tailgating event?

Great pictures! I love polo tailgating…and I’ve come to the conclusion that the horses are the real athletes in this sport!
