Canoeing the Ipswich River

We’re still nursing wounds from the weekend – bug bites, leech bites and poison ivy, primarily – but our two-day trip down the Ipswich River with friends was a smashing success nonetheless.

We headed out of the city in a (futile) attempt to beat the heat, grabbing a group of friends and renting gear from Foote Brothers in Ipswich, MA.

For $65 total, Jack and I got a canoe, paddles, cushions, PFDs, a ride up-river to our launch spot and permission to camp on Colt Island halfway. The deal can’t be beat.

We took a lackadaisical approach to canoeing, stopping periodically for swimming, swinging and refreshment. The section of the river we navigated is slow and winding, and the downstream paddling is easier than the alternative.

The flora! The fauna!

What did you do to stay cool last weekend?
