We’re not particularly diligent about watching weather forecasts – it’s New England, after all, so who really knows? If it’s raining when we wake up, we plan accordingly; if it’s not, we assume it might, and ride anyway.
Yesterday, though, the weather was severe enough that forecasts came to me, in the form of two flash flood warnings from the National Weather Service. I got caught in one lunchtime downpour, and waited out another at Masa. As I ran through raindrops (and, indeed, flooding) I recalled Elizabeth Patterson’s Rainscapes – hyperrealistic works capturing raindrops on windshields in colored pencil and graphite.
Patterson, based in LA, works from photos taken while in her car to recreate watery, insanely detailed scenes. The technique is fascinating, and the effect is incredible.
You can see more (and you really should) of the series at Patterson’s website, find detail shots at Colossal, and watch an interview with the artist for more background.
