This morning I had a chance to stop by a breakfast roundtable as part of Design Exchange Boston, a series of events taking place this week celebrating design.
This morning’s session focused on design as a career, but the wisdom panelists shared was relevant beyond landing a job. Some favorites:
- As a designer, if you’re humble, you’re a martyr.
- Start anywhere, fail early, explore everything.
- If you design your process around an outcome you have in mind, you’ll only get to where you’ve been before.
- What you design is not for you; don’t assume everyone is like you.
- Every step backward is an opportunity to take two steps in another direction.
- Don’t work in a vacuum—reach out, share constantly.
- Know what you don’t know.
- If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.
- Don’t debate your resume—create more.
- Say thank you.
Thank you Check out the full schedule for DxB, running through Sunday, to see if anything strikes your fancy! What’s the best career advice you’ve heard lately?
