While we were checking out First Friday at the ICA last week, Jack and I caught a closer look at Jeffrey Gibson’s ongoing exhibit (Love Song), which we had admittedly skimmed through on our last visit.
I had enjoyed Gibson’s colorful, geometric paintings on drum heads before, but had missed the trapezoidal stretched-hide works on the far wall – and I’m a fan.
The ICA notes that Gibson, “deftly combine[s] geometric abstract painting with the traditional craft materials of his Native American heritage,” and I can’t disagree. The hide as a canvas affords a beautiful effect with acrylic paint, and the slightly off-kilter framing of the Love Song pieces struck me.
When I had a chance to look for more from this artist, I came across more of his sculpture work, including a series of adorned punching bags – though definitely less practical in our living room, I enjoy these quite a bit as well.
For more from Gibson, visit his site and tumblr blog, and stop by the ICA to see the Love Song exhibit in person through July 7.
