Be Mine, Valentine

We’re not much for Valentine’s Day ourselves. (Arbitrarily assigned love days are out. Sneaky surprises on random Fridays are in.) Tonight, Jack has class, and I’m headed out for an annual night in with some of my very favorite women. We will, as always, rendezvous at home. I will, as always, think he’s pretty neat.

On the other hand, Jack and I do appreciate good stationery, and also puns; Valentine’s Day is arguably about those, too. We’re conflicted.

And so, a few (just a few) of the love notes crossed our paths today, that we wouldn’t mind receiving any day of the year.

Invitational

I’ve been holding off on posting about our New Years invites because, frankly, I’m concerned that images won’t do them justice – but the time has come.

This year was our fourth year hosting a black tie NYE, and our third designing formal invitations. For a peek at years past, check out this post, and the portfolio.

Questionable

Postcard Save the Dates are a popular request – less cost for postage, less cost for envelopes and overall simplicity make postcards appealing and approachable.

Though we are more than happy to price out postcard options for clients, and often do, the question always arises: what does Union Jack Creative recommend?

We tend toward anti-postcard, and this is why:

Ampersands Revisited

We’ve shared our thoughts on the ampersand here before – so I’ll just leave this here for you to peruse. Click through for an even larger version.

Ride ‘Em

There’s a slight chance that my recent considerations of dressing my bike up as a horse and going as a cowboy for the Halloween Ride led to Javier Piñón catching my eye.

It’s also possible that it was the result of Jack and me each spending a bit more time than usual browsing home design blogs as of late. (We have a soft spot for chandeliers.)

Either way, these collages are making my day.

Chain Gang

Our love of bikes is well-documented. Our home, however, is conspicuously lacking in any evidence of our two-wheeled ways – aside from the spare set of wheels temporarily living in the office. Despite having artwork in every room, we are completely without creative representations of our beloved bicycle.

Perhaps this is why the work of Yeong-Deok Seo caught my eye this morning.

That, and, it’s just incredibly cool.

Occupation Station

Setting aside personal political perspectives, I still felt it necessary to share the concept of Occupy Design.

As a couple with backgrounds in political science (him), international affairs and anthropology (me), the idea of going beyond hand-drawn signs to associate good design and effective infographics with political protestations is intriguing beyond partisan bounds.

Winding Down

Midway through Friday, I’m thinking calming thoughts to try to stay grounded at my desk. A video of a Zimoun sound sculpture came across my Tumblr dashboard, and was simultaneously mesmerizing and soothing.

Just in case you can use a bit of grounding, too – enjoy.

Fingers crossed for clearer skies in Boston this weekend!

Dear America,

In honor of the launch of online shopping for the US, fashion giant Zara compiled a photographic love letter to our 50 states.

Featuring 50 images by 50 photographers, Zara’s collection depicts each of the 50 states. Perhaps it was the distinct chill in Boston’s air this morning, but scrolling through the selection of photos left me nostalgic for summer – and reminded me of the more beautiful aspects of winter. Included here are just a few of my favorites shots.

Friday Fancies: Learn, Move, Eat

Okay, so we’re on a video kick – but the three quick flicks that comprise our fancies for this Friday are well worth a look. Released just two days ago, the videos have already garnered quite a bit of attention. I’m so glad they came across my Tumblr dash today. (Hat tip to single malt scotch for sharing!)

Rick Mereki, Tim White and Andrew Lees travelled through 11 countries in 44 days, capturing nearly a terabyte of footage to compile these three short films exploring concepts of movement, eating and learning. I watched Learn first – and it gave me goosebumps. The entire triptych made me long for the thrill of travel, because the films capture so well that joy of discovery that is so dear to Jack and me in our adventures.
